Mealtime Confession

Ok, I'm going to start with a confession and then follow it up with some explanation that will hopefully get me somewhat out of hot water. I just had dinner and every thing I ate was extremely bad for me. I had two fajita tacos with the works (guacamole, sour cream, etc) rice and beans, tortilla chips followed by a piece of Dulce de Leche cheesecake. I know...HORRIBLE! And I am now realizing WHY this stuff is so bad for you. I feel HORRIBLE.

But here's the deal...I heard from my doctor Friday and it looks like my insurance will pay for the gastric sleeve. The last time I went through all the nutritional appts. etc They would only pay for the RNY procedure. Now, they will pay for the sleeve YAY! I have an appointment to see him on Monday, but I may have t reschedule as I can't get time off work. I'm going to call them monday morning. If they can't reschedule me for THIS week when I'm off (thursday and friday) then I'm just going to call into work and see him monday. Pretty much, all I think I will need to do is get about 40 lbs off and he can do the surgery. SO, tomorrow, I'm starting an HMR fast. This was the diet I was on right before my mom was diagnosed with Cancer back in 2001. I lost about 36 lbs in four weeks. I weighed myself the other day and while I weighed in at 444 lbs (which would make you think is a decrease from around this time last year), but I think I've lost a lot of muscle mass this year so who knows how much of that 20 lbs is really fat loss from last year?

I'm also going to start on the treadmill and try to do five minutes two or three times a day. I need to get my heart in better shape for surgery too. Hopefully by the time I have the surgery, I will be able to walk at least 15 minutes at a time and can build on that as I begin to lose weight.

I'm scared to death guys, but I know I have to do this. And yeah...the mexican food was kind of a last meal sorta thing.

I am so happy to hear this. I had a lap band about 8 months ago and it has changed my life (and lost about 70 lbs). I'm really excited for you and looking forward to following you through this!

I'm so glad I read about this gastric sleeve. I've never heard of it before and just looked it up on Google. Definitely sounds like the way to go.

My niece who weighs almost 400 pounds is looking into gastric bypass or the lapband. She didn't mention anything about the gastric sleeve. It sounds a lot safer. I'm going to email her and let her know about it.

I'm sure you're scared, but this sounds like the best thing you could ever do for yourself. I wish you the best.

Good for you! Here is a new idea for your jar... eat all meals seated at the table. Have the table set like a nice restaurant. Enjoy breakfast/lunch/dinner and snacks seated with silverware, china and napkins.

I have been reading your blog for a couple of months and have decided to come out of the shadows. I'm a big fan and I'm rooting for you to succeed. I just wanted to tell you good luck and hope the surgery is the tool you need to get yourself on track. Personally, I have mixed feelings about it. I know there are people who absolutely will not survive without it, so if it's a matter of life or death, go for it. I'm of the mindset that I did this to myself (I weigh over 300 lbs) by making bad choices. I have to figure out how to make better choices and do this on my own, because even if I have surgery those bad choices are still going to be out there. I've read the success stories of people who after many attempts and failures one day started putting one foot in front of the other and didn't look back, ie Pasta Queen, Prior Fat Girl, Kim Bensen, Dietgirl, The Joy Fit Club, Biggest Loser, DietTribe and I'm inspired by those stories. I KNOW it can be done and as long as I know it's possible, every time I fall, I'm going to pick myself up, dust myself off and try again. About two years ago my Dr asked me about surgery and I said, 'Absolutely not' and she told me that she was happy I said no and that honestly she would NEVER recommend it, and told me all of the reasons why. She's very supportive and encouraging. It feels good to have a Dr that's on your side. Good Luck, I know you can do this!!

I've read good things about the gastric sleeve as opposed to RNY and the lapband. Seems like patients lose very well on it without some of the more challenging side effects.

Good luck with this decision!
